Are Arizona CCW Permit Recognized by California?
By Doug Little on Feb 24, 2009 in AZ CCW Questions, Out-of-State Carry
Question: I have an AZ CCW Permit. Can I carry my handgun while in California?
Answer: California does NOT recognize the Arizona CCW permit. You cannot carry a concealed weapon in California unless you have a California CWP. In addition, open carry of a firearm in any incorporated area of California is also prohibited by law. If you do decide to bring your handgun with you to California, it must be unloaded and in a locked container if it is in the passenger compartment of your vehicle. It can also be unloaded and locked in the trunk of your car.

You have to be a california resident (1 year) and need a good cause to get one.

John is correct, but even with ‘good cause’ it is very difficult to get a concealed carry permit in California. I can’t locate my notes with the exact numbers, but in Arizona, a much smaller state than California in population, there are over 135,000 valid permits. California has a little over 25,000 state wide. In Los Angeles county, with a population of 9,824,000 there are only 1626 permits as of June 2009.
