Question:  We moved from another state and brought handguns. We had a permit to own in another state. We also have receipts for them. Do we need to register them in Arizona? Also if we sell them does the buyer need a permit to buy in Arizona?

Answer:  In Arizona, you are not required to register your firearms. There is no registration requirement at all.

In terms of selling your firearms to a private party in Arizona, you can legally do a face to face transaction without any documentation at all.

If they are handguns, the buyer is legally required to be 18 years old. If you do sell the handguns in a private sale, I would strongly recommend that you draw up a bill of sale for the transaction.

The bill of sale should describe the manufacturer, model, caliber and serial number of the firearm being transferred, who is transferring it and who it is being transferred to.  I’d suggest that you have the name and address of the seller and buyer on the bill of sale.  This will protect you if you are ever contacted by law enforcement regarding the firearm.

When I do private party transfers, I also check the driver’s license of the person I am selling to. I like to make sure that the name on the license and the name on the bill of sale match.

Remember, none of this is required by law. It is just good common sense when transferring valuable property between two parties…
